Overview
The City of Rio de Janeiro commits to implementing its first Municipal Plan for Policies for Attention to Migrants and Refugees.
In December 2022, the City of Rio de Janeiro established a Municipal Policy for the Protection of the Rights of the Migrant and Refugee Population, aimed to protect human rights of these populations. Earlier that same year, the city also inaugurated its first Immigrant Assistance Reference Centre – RIO (CRAI-RIO). The city will now launch its first Municipal Plan for Policies for Attention to Migrants and Refugees in January 2024, providing the implementation framework for the adopted Policy.
The Plan is developed with active participation of the migrant and refugee population through an intersectoral committee, composed of members of civil society and the city administration.
The plan has several thematic axes, e.g.:
Participation and socio-cultural empowerment of migrants, refugees, and stateless persons.
Access to services
Combat xenophobia, racism, religious intolerance, LGBTQIA+phobia, and other forms of discrimination
Enable integration into the labour market and assist with professional qualification and language training
Ensure access to leisure and sports
