Overview

The initiative involves the comprehensive formalization and urban transformation of the La Pista settlement, with the goal of officially recognizing it as the municipality’s first “Barrio de Paz” (Peace Neighbourhood). The initiative combines tools for territorial planning, land management, and social empowerment through:

  • Participatory processes with community leaders and residents;

  • Property surveys, demographic characterization, and infrastructure mapping;

  • Risk identification and land-use analysis;

  • Design of an urban habitat management plan;

  • Actions promoting coexistence, social cohesion, and a protection-focused approach.

The strategy not only improves urban conditions and access to rights but also encourages social integration among migrants, refugees, and the local population. It also lays the groundwork for future investments in water, sanitation, mobility, and urban infrastructure.

Expected Impact

The action will enable the formal recognition of the settlement, facilitating its incorporation into the urban fabric and allowing public investment in infrastructure and basic services. With this, more than 1,000 households will benefit, including migrants, refugees, and vulnerable local residents.

Among the expected impacts are:

  • Improved access to safe water, sanitation, health services, and connectivity.

  • Reduced risks associated with informal land occupation.

  • Strengthened social fabric and community mechanisms for peaceful coexistence.

  • Greater residential stability and socio‑economic opportunities.

  • Creation of a replicable model of urban integration in migratory contexts.

Finally, the recognition as a Peace Neighbourhood positions Maicao as a national reference in inclusive territorial solutions for migrant and refugee populations and host communities.

Priority Objectives

Protecting those most vulnerable

Providing access to urban infrastructure, social services, and education, regardless of status

Eliminating all forms of discrimination and promoting evidence-based public discourse

In Maicao we have opened our doors with solidarity and responsibility. Today we are working hand in hand with the international community to turn our “Barrio de Paz” Peace Neighbourhood into a showcase of inclusion, dignity and opportunities for migrant and returning families.
