Climate Migration and Displacement: What are LRGs doing?

Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) remain at the forefront of delivering pragmatic responses to the impacts of climate change on human mobility, including all communities in their prevention and adaptation strategies. This online Peer Learning event, organised in the framework of the Call to Local Action for Migrants and Refugees, gathered cities and stakeholders to discuss local and regional actions to mainstream climate action while preserving the life and dignity of all people unconditionally.

The peer learning focused on territories affected by the impacts of climate change, and those that are seizing the opportunities brought by migrants and displaced communities to reinforce urban and community resilience to climate emergencies, while fostering the socio-economic inclusion of the affected groups. In particular, the peer learning looked into actions taken by local and regional governments and the contributions that context-based multi-stakeholder approaches can have to further advance and expand the impact of local initiatives.

We heard from cities like London (UK), Nairobi (Kenya), Hareisa (Somaliland), Manta '(Ecuador), Abasan Al-Kabira (Palestine), and Move Green (FAMSI).

The session was kicked off by an in-person workshop hosted by the City of Paris to discuss the results of their “Climate Migration in Urban Areas: Challenges, Representations, and Inclusion” project.
